Jamaican dancehall superstar Beenie Man has issued a public apology to Trinidad and Tobago after incorrectly claiming that Jamaica introduced Carnival before the twin-island republic.

In a statement posted on Instagram, the Grammy-winning artiste admitted that he got the history wrong, explaining that he had confused Byron Lee's contribution to Jamaica Carnival with the origins of the wider Caribbean celebration.

Beenie Man acknowledged Trinidad and Tobago's rich Carnival history, saying he never intended to disrespect its people or culture.

He also thanked those who corrected him, ending his apology with a message of Caribbean unity, declaring, "Still learning, always love. One Caribbean."
